It is absolutely heartbreaking to see your child suffer from sickness, even if it is as simple as a nasty cold and fever. Cold and flu season comes every year, more often pronounced these days because of the extreme changes in weather. Studies have shown that average pre-school children can have 12 colds a year – symptoms vary between cough, low-grade fever, head ache and body malaise. This is not counting stomach flu viruses, the flu and other allergies and respiratory ailments most children experience.
You can never be ready when your child gets sick, but you can be prepared and be informed how to take care of them when they do. Parents need knowledge. The first thing a parent need to know is when to call the doctor, schedule a doctor visit and how to distinguish when a simple cold has progressed to become flu.
The flu is a serious case of sickness and most often would require prescription antibiotics. Here are some of the symptoms:
- High fever
- Headache
- Tiredness/weakness (can be extreme)
- Dry cough
- Sore throat
- Runny nose
- Body or muscle aches
- Diarrhea and vomiting also can occur, but are more common in children.
Some of the things you can do to help them be as comfortable and pain-free:
- Nutritious and nourishing food. Most sick children do not have an appetite, keeping food simple and prepared in a way that they prefer is better than giving them foods that will make them well but they would not eat. It is better to give them fried chicken nuggets than grilled chicken with peas if it helps them eat more. Getting food in their system is the goal here to keep them nourished. The same goes for liquids. If they want cold juices, give it to them. It will keep them hydrated.
- Have them in comfortable clothes in a comfortable environment. If your child seems more comfortable in the couch rather than in his room, allow it. Have them dressed in comfortable pajamas. Changing clothes frequently especially when they have broken their fever and are perspiring is a must.
- Be ready with these essentials: thermometer (for checking temperature), acetaminophen/ibuprofen, aspirin, Vitamin C, cough drops, humidifier, saline nose drops or spray.
Of course, prevention is better than treating a sick child. Once flu season starts, advise your child to wash their hands regularly and do not share utensils with other kids in school. The school is the number one hot spot for viral sicknesses, so staying in touch with school authorities can help keep you informed on what is rampant on their school grounds (flu, colds, stomach virus, etc.)
At the home front, eating well, getting plenty of sleep, taking vitamin supplements especially Vitamin C, limiting junk food especially sugary sweets, gargling with plain water a couple of times a day are effective in keeping the cough and colds at bay.
